Old Money Sportswear and Active Polos Are Growing in Merch

It’s easier to stay ahead of the curve when you understand the why behind the trends. It allows us to see around corners to help Withers & Co. clients prepare for what’s coming next. Like most of you, Janelle & I are starting to defrost from the winter and turning over our wardrobes from the cozy sweaters to warmer weather apparel that will take us through our busy days from client meetings to afternoon outdoor activities.

This spring season, we see two trends weaving themselves together: the timeless look of “Old Money” sportswear, also known as club sports, and the luxurious comfort of high-performance modern-day athleisure wear, like cardigans, and in particular, the renewed popularity of polo athletic wear.

Polos too old fashioned? Think again.

The “Old Money” aesthetic is alive in New Zealand this Spring; , as we see in the latest offerings from brands like Huffer, MaggieMarilyn and HarrisTapper and Kowtow:

HarrisTapper offers polos in 5 different ways from long sleeves to short sleeves and in two dress styles:

What "Old Money" Sportswear Really Means Today

This ode to club sports and old money is an homage to the ideals of yesterday; to getting back to a slower pace and enjoying the good ole’ days. Afternoons at the club, tennis or golf, today maybe pickleball or padel, like they did before the hustle and bustle.  While it may have some similarities to your grandparents’ polo or cardigan, today’s sportswear is made with fabric advances of performance materials and sustainability that delivers the ultimate in comfort.  Now designed for movement, breathability, and comfort, many come equipped with moisture-wicking and/or UV-protection.

Not Just Performance Polos, Apparel That Promotes Wellness

Gifting quality fabrics in this old money style to your teams and clients sends a message that you understand the true value of time and quality.

Vintage old money fashion allows for the opportunity to incorporate pieces that are comfortable and refined, from team uniforms to corporate gifts; and while sportswear polo shirts play a key role in this trend, it extends to include other pieces, such as active skirts, crewnecks, fanny packs, athletic shorts, and socks, to name but a few.

We recommend that customers include subtle embroidery for decoration, or a more vintage-inspired print, and to use a classic color palette.

As we get outside this spring, consider an active polo piece or other athleisure for your clients or teams and give them the gift of quality and comfort.
